An old 1920s mansion in Santiago’s historic centre that has been renovated and extended to create a 42-room hotel, the Hotel Magnolia is a bold blend of old and new. While we weren’t completely convinced by the Scandinavian-style décor in the new part of the building, the original part of the hotel has been beautifully restored and is a chic addition to Santiago’s offering of hotels.

Located at the bottom of Cerro Santa Lucía, the hotel is in the historic centre of Santiago halfway between the Bellas Artes and Santa Lucía metro stations. Although the area surrounding the hotel is more of a business and shopping district, it’s only a short walk from the bars and restaurants of Lastarria.

The hotel has 42 rooms, which are divided into superior rooms in the old part of the building and junior suites with super-king size beds and a separate living space in the modern extension. The wood-lined walls and ceilings is a style that works well in the south of Chile but for us doesn’t work quite as well in the centre of Santiago.

The areas of the hotel we liked most are within the original 1920s building, where the original wooden doors, fireplaces and black and white floor tiles have been lovingly restored. With a light and airy restaurant and cosy library, there is plenty to appreciate in terms of architecture and history in this part of the hotel.

Other features include a rooftop terrace with views of Cerro Santa Lucía and a restaurant with a contemporary, inventive menu that changes weekly and is based on the availability of local ingredients.
