Review

The Hosteria El Pilar is the only accommodation around El Chalten that actually sits in the park itself and so has a leg up to start with as far as walking and views are concerned. It is around a 20 minute drive out of the main town to get to it, and the hosteria itself has been built as a replica of the original houses that were pre-fabricated and brought across by the British when they colonised. A really interesting place to stay while here.

The rooms are pretty simple all in all, but the main reason to come and stay in the Hosteria El Pilar is for the views which are of the valley of mountains that run out from the northern edge of the Fitz Roy group. During early to mid April, the change of colours of the Lenga trees that dominate the valley lights up this whole area and is truly a sight to behold.

On the whole the Hosteria El Pilar is a great place to head to if you are a keen walker and also would like to immerse totally in the nature of the area. All of the rooms have views out across the valley and so it is a wonderful spot. Being a hosteria, and a simple one at that, there are no high end luxuries on offer and so it is similar in feel to staying in an estancia, but it is worth a stay due to the location. The main drawbacks of being located here is that it is not a short walk to the town and so, if you feel like having super in the Hosteria is going to be too much, then there is very little room for escape.

Superb food, great service, unique location, good value
