The Casa Mosquito is an open and airy boutique hotel on a hillside overlooking Copacabana and Ipanema, with views up to the pacified favela of Canto de Galho. For those looking for an alternative to the large beachfront hotels of Copacabana and Ipanema, this French-owned hotel with its arty design and guesthouse style hospitality, gets our vote!

Just a 7-minute walk from the restaurants and bars of Ipanema, the Casa Mosquito has one of the best locations for a small boutique hotel in Rio. While being set on a hillside gives it the advantage of having spectacular panoramic views, it does mean a bit of a climb up to the hotel, which might not be suitable for everyone.

The hotel has nine individually designed suites, divided between the restored colonial mansion and the hotel’s modern annex. The annex houses five spacious Carioca Terrace Suites, which are all named after celebrities from Rio’s past and have their own private terrace. The Mansion contains four Sugarloaf Deluxe Suites, which, like the rooms in the annex, are all individually designed and have their own balcony with views across to Sugarloaf and the hotel’s courtyard.

Built into the hillside, the hotel is set over various floors, with an open and airy lounge and reception area, leading through to a tranquil courtyard, which separates the main house from the annex. Although a small outdoor lift is being built, at the moment only steep stairs lead up to the spectacular rooftop pool and bar area.

In keeping with the hotel’s quirky decor, pool loungers come in the form of four-poster beds and beanbags dotted around the terrace from which you can sit and admire the panoramic views. Looking out over Copacabana, Ipanema, Sugarloaf and the Canto de Galho favela, the owners of Casa Mosquito pride themselves on giving guests a more authentic view of Rio.

One of the advantages of being a small hotel is that the Casa Mosquito offers its guests truly personalised service, including spa treatments on demand and a concierge service. Guests can order a delicious lunch or dinner cooked by the hotel’s cook and breakfast is served inside or in the small courtyard. With its beautiful rooftop terrace and open and airy layout, this hotel truly feels like a haven of calm and tranquillity from the city below.

Good location, personalised service, quirky design.

No direct access to the beach.
