Wine & Food: Tierra del Fuego
Often not mentioned for its culinary prowess, this is a region that will surprise
Set down on the southern most tip of Argentina, the isolated and windswept Ushuaia and Tierra del Fuego is not somewhere that you would think of for food. It is true that they don’t have the luscious pastoral lands of northern Argentina, but they do have very good seafood, in particular the mighty king crab. Similarly, the range of accommodation may not be vast, but there are a few hotels in the region that cater very well.
Measuring in at around a meter across, the king crab certainly lives up to its name and there are not many that can take on a whole one without a helping hand! Combined with some of sumptuous wines of Argentina and the nearby Chile, there are a few restaurants and hotels that are recommended to visit while here in order to sample the full experience!
There is also a strong sheep farming tradition in the region and, in fact, the production of sheep and wool used to be known in the area at production of “white gold”. Today many of the large farms have dwindled with less and less revenue created by the herds, but it is still possible to sample a local parilla in one of the many restaurants in the town.
